The last time we checked in, production for the hotly anticipated “Dr. Strange” movie was set to start somewhere this fall, and the studios were still headhunting for the perfect actor to take on the role as Marvel’s greatest protector against magical peril. The Hollywood Reporter was pretty sure that Joaquin Phoenix is the latest Hollywood heavyweight to be added to the mix of hopefuls to take on the coveted role, but the rumor was debunked. Edgar Ramirez, Tom Hardy, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jared Leto and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are also rumoured to take on the role, but nothing was confirmed by the studios or the actors.
Deadline.com claimed a while back that Britain’s finest is standing in line to nab the coveted role as Dr. Strange, with Tom Hardy and Benedict Cumberbatch announced on the same day. Well, it eventually came back to Cumberbatch with new reports claiming that Marvel Studios is reportedly in final talks with the “Sherlock” actor to have him star as the titular character.
Scott Derrickson will direct with a script rewritten by Jon Spaihts. “Dr. Strange” is set to be released on July 8, 2016. Cumberbatch’s casting is expected to be announced today in a secret press event at Disney’s El Capitan Theater.
For those of you not in the know, here is a good description for Dr. Stephen Strange, courtesy of Comicvine.com:
“Dr. Stephen Strange was once a gifted but egotistical surgeon who sought out the Ancient One to heal his hands after they were wounded in a car accident. Instead, the Ancient One trained him to become Master of the Mystic Arts and the Sorcerer Supreme of Earth.”
