Metacritic users have been participating in surveys to name the best movies, TV shows, games, albums and songs for the past five years. Things got really confusing quickly when they managed to rate the same movies as their best, and most overrated films of the past year? Richard Linklater’s coming of age drama “Boyhood” was the highest scoring new movie in Metacritic history (100/100). The twelve-years-in-the-making drama was also cited as one of aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes’ winners of an annual Golden Tomato award.  Linklater’s Oscar-frontrunner was also voted the second most overrated movie by Metacritic users. Yup, anyone who doesn’t enjoy a film as others do will have the privilege of pinning it as overrated it seems. Obviously this is subjective to what users consider overrated, but it is up to us at the end of the day to decide if their “opinion” is worth considering.

Even more surprising to most fans of the Christopher Nolan space epic, “Interstellar” made the list as the top overrated movie of 2014. Movie-goers secured Nolan’s financial success by chasing up earnings with over $660 million at cinemas worldwide. The film starring Matthew McConaughey and  Anne Hathaway garnered no less than four nominations at the Baftas, but failed to impress domestically. Metacritic dished out a rating of 74. The futuristic space adventure is followed by James Gunn’s “Guardians of the Galaxy”. The Marvel comic book movie also received the short end of the stick even though it was also voted as the sixth best movie of the year according to the users of the review aggregator. The group of superheroes managed to steal the spot as the third highest grossing Marvel Studios movie of all-time behind “The Avengers” and “Iron Man 3”. The science fiction war film “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay (part 1)” occupies the fourth spot. The film based on the novel written by Suzanne Collins was mainly criticized for its lack of action and for splitting the novel into two feature films. The five is rounded up with Alejandro González Iñárritu’s black comedy Birdman.
