“Ouija” managed to scare away the competition at the domestic box office on its debut weekend. The horror movie directed and co-written by Stiles White raked in an impressive $20 million, produced on a shoestring budget of only $5 million. Halloween fever is sweeping the nation while Universal and Blumhouse are smiling all the way to the bank despite the films poor reviews via Rottentomatoes.com. The site says the following about the film, “Slowly, steadily, although no one seems to be moving it in that direction, the Ouija planchette points to NO.”

Keanu Reeves’ critically acclaimed “John Wick” had to settle as runner-up this week with a respectable $14.2 million. “John Wick” follows the story of an ex-hitman who comes out of retirement to track down a group of gangsters that took everything from him. With New York City as his bullet-riddled playground, Wick (Reeves) is a fresh and stylized take on the “assassin genre”.

Brad Pitt’s “Fury” slips down  from first to third place this week adding an estimated $13 million, and Ben Affleck’s “Gone Girl” is at the fourth place with approximately $11.1 million. The top 5 is rounded up by “The Book of Life” with approximately $9.8 million.
