Adam Sandler is once again the most overpaid actor for the second consecutive year on Forbes’ list. Returning only $3.20 for every $1 paid, Sandler’s “Jack and Jill” and “That’s My Boy” sunk him again despite his big screen success with “Grown Ups 2”. The comedian is even less valuable compared to last year with his estimated return of $3.40 for every $1 paid. Johnny Depp joins the list in second place with approximately $4.10 for every $1 paid. He struck out with “The Lone Ranger” and “Dark Shadows” but was saved from complete failure by playing Jack Sparrow in “Pirates of Caribbean”.
Ben Stiller is also a newcomer on the list with “Tower Heist” and “The Watch (2012)” tanking at the box office. Stiller only managed to return $4.80 for every $1 paid. Ryan Reynolds and Tom Hanks are rounding out the top five, respectively returning $4.90 and $5.20 for every $1 paid. Reynolds’ R.I.P.D. was a huge flop in 2013, but we expect the buff actor to make a big comeback with his upcoming “Deadpool” movie. Hanks took a slip with Cloud Atlas which flopped dismally, despite good ratings from numerous trustworthy review aggregators.
Forbes used data from the research for their Celebrity 100 list and Box Office Mojo to compile the Overpaid list. They look at each star’s last three major releases (not including animated movies) and come up with estimates for earnings. They add those earnings together for a total compensation number. They then add the operating income from the last three movies and divide that by total compensation to come up with a return on investment numbers.
