Not so long ago I volunteered to contribute an article for GeekShizzle, so I decided to list my Top 5 Chick Rock bands, now that being said, what a HUGE task. There are so many excellent bands out there, I decided to specifically focus on “girly” bands, meaning woman with powerful vocals, who gets my blood pumping and me jumping up and down in my own “mosh pit” in the living room!
The bands I selected are equally great, so to list them according to the usual rating scale would be an impossible task. So here goes, these are my Top 5 Chick Rock bands that is currently on my playlist.

Halestorm
Halestorm is a Grammy Award winning American rock band from Red Lion, Pennsylvania. The song “Love Bites (So Do I)”, from the “The Strange Case Of…” album, won their first Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance. Sisters Arejay and Elizabeth “Lzzy” Hale, are well equipped with the writers pen, they have been actively busy writing music and performing since the age of 10 and 13. Halestorm is a hard working band, performing as many as 250 shows a year. They have rubbed shoulders whilst touring with the best of them, groups like Chevelle, Papa Roach, Disturbed, Shinedown, Avenged Sevenfold and Stone Sour to name a few. If you are “pissed off” with anyone and need to get rid of your anger or head-bang the living daylights out; Halestorm is the jam for you. This band really gets me going.

Paramore
Geekshizzle wrote a review about their last album, and in all honesty the thing that got me going was the powerful vocal chords of Hayley Williams, and I am not hearing the same fierce personality in their new self titled album. The fans seem to differ from my opinion as their latest album is rocking/popping on the Billboard Charts. The big change came in 2010, when a message from Hayley, Jeremy, and Taylor was released through Paramore.net stating that Josh and Zac were leaving the band.
They were praised for their “take no nonsense” approach to their album lyrics, and they really got the crowd going with their live performances, but even with the former Lostprophets and current Angels & Airwaves and Nine Inch Nails drummer Ilan Rubin, their last efforts does not make me rush to the nearest music store to buy their album. I will however, always be loyal to their older albums (Riot, Brand new eyes), if I had my way, “All I wanted” would have been my wedding song.

Fireflight
Fireflight is an American Christian rock band formed in Eustis, Florida in 1999. This Grammy award nominated band is nothing but consistent, and it seemed unlikely for them to ever fall. With powerful choruses, recognizable melodies, and strong lead vocals from Dawn Michele, the band has been a force to be reckoned with in the Christian hard rock scene. Fireflight’s musical evolution came in 2008 , with their Unbreakable album. Since then they have incorporated different musical styles, ranging from hard rock to soft/acoustic.

Flyleaf
Flyleaf is an American hard rock band, formed in the Belton and Temple, Texas regions in 2002. Their debut album titled “Flyleaf” went platinum after selling more than one million copies. Who will ever forget the opening lyrics “I’m so Sick” from the movie Die Hard, only to realize that this is a Christian band. WOW! Their original vocalist Lacy Sturm decided to leave the band, to concentrate on being a mom. So Kristen May took over, in all honesty she does a stellar job of duplicating Lacy’s singing skills. I do however prefer Lacy Sturm’s unsettling growls and emotional vocal abilities.

The Pretty Reckless
The Pretty Reckless are an American alternative rock band from New York. They have toured with the likes of Marilyn Manson and Evanescence to name a few. The band has been successful in the UK, topping the UK Rock Charts with 3 singles with the most notable, “Make Me Wanna Die”. The lead singer, Taylor Momsen, is a 19 year old model and actress better known for portraying Jenny Humphrey in the hit teen series, Gossip Girl. It will be interesting to see if she will continue with her music career with her busy schedule. Momsen entertains the crowds with her girly outfits and beautiful blonde hair. Don’t be fooled by her feminine appearance, she packs quite a punch vocally and at 19 one can only imagine how she will grow as an artists to perfect her craft.

why the f#ck is evanescence not on here?
As the author stated “these are my Top 5 Chick Rock bands that is currently on my playlist.” Would be nice to hear a new album, its been a while.
Where are Melody’s Echo Chamber, the Ravionettes and the Plastiscenes? Those bands are terrific. They really rock.
I died laughing with the halestorm piece. I mean “sisters arejay and lzzy” funny stuff there. Arejay looks nothing like a girl. That’s great.
I’ve been listening to The Donnas and Girlschool lately. Go easy on me. :-) =PSH
