In an interview with BuzzFeed on Thursday, June 26, Del Toro mentioned that Travis Beacham will also be working on the script.

He said:

“The characters I love will return,”

“Raleigh, Mako, Newt, Gottlieb and who knows, maybe even Hannibal Chau – but we are taking them into a fresh territory that will display amazing sights and battles. The first film set the stage and now we’re ready to have a blast.”

Set in the 2020s, “Pacific Rim” follows the story of pilots controlling giant “Jaegers” – Robots – to battle Kaijus who emerged from an interdimensional portal on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. Initially slow out the blocks, “Pacific Rim” landed at No. 3, earning approximately $37,2 million on its opening weekend. The film eventually ended up tops, raking in $101,8 million in North America, grossing $411 million worldwide.

Universal is planning to release “Pacific Rim 2” on April 7, 2017 in 3D and IMAX. Arguably one of the best sci-fi action flicks in decades, GS will be counting the days until the anticipated release of the sequel.
