Thomas Kretschmann has been officially cast as the evil Baron Wolfgang von Strucker in the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron. We reported earlier in December on the rumoured candidates for the role, and how Baron Wolfgang may fit into the plot of Avengers 2.
The artificially intelligent robot Ultron (played by James Spader) is still the main villain of the movie, but Kretschmann will now also be giving the team of Avengers a bit of a headache. In the comics, von Strucker was one of the heads of HYDRA, the Nazi-esque group that consistently gave Captain America and S.H.I.E.L.D. such a hard time. This opens the door wide open for another link with Captain America and the possible return of Red Skull?
Kretschmann is a great choice for the role. Who doesn’t love a good stereotypical European bad guy that’s well dressed, has a great German accent, impeccable posture, a formidable jaw-line and loves to torture the American hero? Will he lose his hair to fit in with the comic version of Baron Wolfgang von Strucker above?
We discussed von Strucker’s potential involvement in the film here.
Avengers 2 is scheduled to be released on May 1, 2015. Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson are expected to reprise their respective roles. James Spader will be taking on the role as the villainous Ultron, Elizabeth Olsen will portray Scarlet Witch, and Aaron Johnson as her twin brother Quicksilver. Don Cheadle will suit up as War Machine to join forces with “The Avengers.”
