The official second trailer was released Yesterday, it is is packed with action and awesomeness. We learn quite a few things from this second trailer, and whether fans will like it or not, is to be seen. The Desolation of Smaug Second Trailer – What we know now:
1. There will definitely be a love-interest
The trailer now confirms what we suspected, there will be a love interest between Tauriel and Legolas. This is of course not in the book (remember there are zero female characters in The Hobbit Book), and must be purely there only to cater for the female/romantic fans out there.
2. Beorn looks Awesome
Beorn (played by Mikael Persbrandt) is a skin-changer who dwelt in the Vales of Anduin near the western eaves of Mirkwood, he could take the form of a Man or a huge black bear. In the book “The Hobbit”, he played a great part in the victory over the Goblins at the Battle of Five Armies. While not a “giant” outright, Beorn’s human form was of such great size that the three and a half foot tall Bilbo judged that he could have easily walked between Beorn’s legs without touching his body.
3. There will be Spiders.
From the trailer is is difficult to determine which spider(s), but we know she/they will feature. We have this crazy hope that Ungoliant will play a part in this. This obviously was not in the book, but as we’ve mentioned, Peter Jackson has crossed the line of adding to the book a long time ago. At least his adding from Tolkien’s previous work (mostly), which made us hope he brings in these additional characters.
Ungoliant of course, was a primordial being in the shape of a great spider. She was initially an ally of Melkor (the original and worst of all evils, Sauron would be his Bitch), and for a short time in Middle-earth as well. Ungoliant is the mother of Shelob (Lord of the Rings), and therefore the oldest, and first, of the Spiders of Mirkwood.
4. Sauron Returns
Gandalf will make further discoveries about Sauron, and his return. We get our first glimpse of his “eye” as we’ve seen it in Lord of the Rings.
5. Bard the Bowman
Bard has one of the book’s best moments, explaining it will obviously be a huge spoiler. Just take note that he is playing a huge role in the rest of the trilogy.
6. Smaug
Benedict Cumberbatch as the voice of Smaug sounds fantastic. We’ve had some concerns about Smaug’s voice, but it sounds like Benedict will pull it off. You have to listen to is… we …are… mesmerized.
7. Dwarves and Elves will never trust each other
This distrust is continued in the second film. There is so much more going on that mere Dwarf stupidity. If you take into consideration the betrayal by the elves over the Dwarves in the entire age 1, and 2. Then they sure have some valid reasons to not trust the elves. We wished Peter Jackson could have conveyed more of this across. Unfortunately most of the viewers will see the Dwarves as a stubborn race.
