We’ve been hoping for this sequel to happen for so long the pain is almost forgotten. Luckily we received some good news from Sean Astin himself that not only is the Goonies sequel still happening, we can expect the return of one-eyed willy!

Sean Astin played Mikey in the original The Goonies, and he was the leader of the gang who lives in the lower class division of the Goondocks. Astin has probably been one of the loudest supporters of a sequel. At various points, he’s said that The Goonies 2 will be a true sequel that finds the original kids all grown up and on another adventure. Now, while visiting Phoenix ComicCon 2016, Astin let this slip, courtesy of Youtube.

“In the original Goonies, it’s not the only time that |Mikey will come face to face with One-Eyed Willy.”

One-Eyed Willy is the pirate who left his ship and treasure behind for the Goonies to find, and it was the catalyst of their adventure. It sounds like Astin has some early insight into the script, assuring that this key element will live and breath again in the sequel. But who knows if this will ever happen. And judging from the reactions to the Ghostbusters remake, perhaps it shouldn’t. Maybe it’s just fun to talk about, and assures that no one’s childhood gets injured in the process.

The one thing that Astin’s comments do seem to confirm is that we’ll see some, if not all, of the original Goonies cast return in some capacity. Corey Feldman, Josh Brolin, Kerri Green, Martha Plimpton, and Jonathan Quan have all expressed an interest in returning. Only Jeff Cohen, who played Chunk, has confirmed that he will not be back to perform the Truffle Shuffle yet again. Then again, perhaps the only returning Goonie will be Mikey. And that might be kind of sad. We’ll have to wait and see.
