Tron 3 Cancelled by Disney

The week kicks off with some pretty sad news fellow geeks. THR is reporting that Disney is no longer moving forward with their plans for Tron 3. The project was never officially greenlit, but things seemed to be moving forward fast. Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski was set to return to helm the sequel, and both Olivia Wilde and Garrett Hedlund were going to reprise their roles as the main characters. Pre-production on the film started earlier this year, and the studio was looking to shoot it this fall. There’s no word on why exactly they passed on the project, but I wonder if one of the reasons is because Tomorrowland underperformed at the box office. That might have sparked bad memories of Tron: Legacy underperforming at the box office when it was first released.

This is terrible news. To soothe your sadness, there is already a petition you can sign to get Tron 3 greenlit again! Tron is such a cool franchise, and it still has awesome potential. Let’s hope we still get to see it sometime in the future…

Released in 1982, the original TRON under performed at the box office, but it nonetheless managed to find an important place in pop culture over the next few decades.
