The Divergent Series: Insurgent” stole the box office crown this weekend with a massive $54 million opening. The second film in the series posted figures only slightly below 2014’s “Divergent” which pocketed $54.6 million in its first weekend. In a bizarre twist of the battle of the critics, CinemaScore dished out a very positive A-minus internationally, while Rottentomatoes.com smashed the pic directed by Robert Schwentke with a very unfavorable score of only 32%.

“Insurgent” dodged the onslaught of “The Gunman”, another newcomer this week that performed under par at the box office despite its two-time Academy Award winning leading man Sean Penn. The film could only rake in a measly $5 million on a budget of 40 million. Penn stars as a hitman who attempts to leave his job behind for the woman he loves, only to find that the actuality of giving up the professional killing game is much harder than expected. Last week’s champion “Cinderella” slips down to second place while ending strong in its second week at the box office with $34.5 million. “Run All Night” also moved down one spot, now placing third with an estimated $5.1 million. The “Gunman” takes fourth place, while the “Kingsman: The Secret Service” is still holding on in fifth with $4.6 million.
