The Walking Dead” raised the bar for AMC with yet another record-breaking debut with the season 5 opener entitled, “No Sanctuary”. The post apocalyptic horror series smashed the ratings record with 17.3 million same day viewers. This is officially the highest ratings ever on the show’s history and on cable television history. The season 5 opener easily outperformed the season 4 premiere which drew a series-best at 16.1 million. “High School Musical 2” use to sit at the top spot with 17.2 million viewers, competing in the non-sports telecast in cable networks. “No Sanctuary” also managed to rake in 11 million viewers in the coveted 18-49 demographic, making it the most watched show in the age group. Even the post show, “The Talking Dead” pulled 6.9 million viewers and 4.5 in the 18-49 demo.

Exceptionally high season openers for any show is always accompanied by huge piracy downloads. According to Piracy tracking firm Excipio, the new episode was downloaded by approximately 1.27 million unique IP addresses worldwide in the first 24 hours since its release. The past two season premieres were downloaded 178,000 and 296,0000 times respectively.

“The Walking Dead” will return this Sundays, 9 P.M. on AMC.
