Guardians of the Galaxy” is officially Marvel‘s third highest-grossing movie ever after it out-shined “Iron Man” over the past weekend at the box office. We predicted that “Guardians of the Galaxy” will pile up the stacks of cash, but this shouldn’t come as a surprise after the action comedy smashed the official August box office record on its debut weekend. “Guardians” also came in hot as the third-highest movie opening of the year behind “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and “Transformers: Age of Extinction“.

For those of you living under a rock, “Guardians of the Galaxy” is set in the same universe as “The Avengers” franchise. The film stars “Parks and Recreation” actor Chris Pratt as space pilot, thief, and all-round bad boy, Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord. After stealing a priceless, powerful orb, coveted by Lee Pace’s villainous Ronan – big, blue and encased entirely in body armour – Quill is forced to evade Ronan by reluctantly teaming up with a band of misfits. The unlikely ensemble consists of the mysterious Gamora (a green Zoe Saldana), Drax the Destroyer (a formidable Dave Bautista), Rocket (a talking racoon with an X Factor-worthy sob-story, voiced by Bradley Cooper) and Groot (Vin Diesel as a talking tree).

The film directed by James Gunn garnered an estimated $3.8 million over the weekend, raking in a total of $319.2 million after nine weeks since its release. “Iron Man” now settles for fourth place with its $318.41 million. “The Avengers” is still king of the silver screen with $623 million, followed by “Guardians of the Galaxy” by “Iron Man 3” with $409 million. Robert Downey Jr. recently revealed in an interview with the Toronto Sun, that “Galaxy in some ways is the best Marvel movie ever”. Gunn has already set the wheels in motion for “Guardians of the Galaxy 2” that is set to hit theatres on July 28, 2017.
