Denzel Washington is back with a bang in the “The Equalizer”. The movie becomes one of Washington’s top performers, raking in $35 million at the domestic box office.  “The Equalizer” follows  Robert McCall “Washington”, a former black ops commando who has faked his death to live a quiet life in Boston. When he comes out of his self-imposed retirement to rescue a young girl, Teri (Chloë Grace Moretz), he finds himself face to face with ultra-violent Russian gangsters.

Washington’s action thriller dethroned last week’s champ “The Maze Runner”, which settles for second place with an estimated $17.5 million. This week’s newcomer “The Boxtrolls” takes third place with a respectable $17.3 million. The animated film follows subterranean trolls who raise an orphaned boy, who helps them fight back against an evil exterminator. “This Is Where I Leave You” occupies the fourth spot with approximately $7 million, and “Dolphin Tale 2” rounds up the top 5 with an estimated $4.8 million. Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” is still in the running with $3.8 million in its 9th week at the box office.
