Taking all figures in account, premiere telecast and encore runs combined, 8.09 million total viewers and 5.30 million viewers in adults 18-49 demo was reached with the broadcast. It will also likely become the no.1-rated single telecast in FX history when Live+7 data becomes available in approximately three weeks. Perhaps the news that the season premier will be very controversial may have influenced the huge response from viewers . Sutter said that he wanted to do the controversial scene for some time now and he explains why it was included:

“I’ve wanted to do that story for about three years,” “I knew that it would be somewhat controversial, but I feel like, as much as I wouldn’t do something because it was controversial, I’m also not going to not do something because it’s controversial.”

In season 6, Lee Toric visits Clay in jail, who wants to use Clay possibly to get his revenge.

He added that the scene is key because it is “the catalyst for the third act of this morality play we’re doing.” He continues

“It sets everything in motion for this season that will ultimately lead to the end that then will bring us into the final season and what I see as the ultimate comeuppance of everything in terms of the series.”
