The Hollywoodreporter.com broke the news first with the exciting news that Syfy is adapting Terry Gilliam’s 1995 feature 12 Monkeys. The original film, inspired by Chris Marker’s 1962 short film La Jetée, is set in the year 2035 and humankind subsists in a desolate netherworld following the eradication of 99% of the Earth’s population, a holocaust that makes the planet’s surface uninhabitable, and mankind’s destiny uncertain. A desperate group of scientists secure a reluctant volunteer, James Cole (portrayed by Bruce Willis), to embark on a dangerous mission back to the year 1996, where they hope he can help unravel this apocalyptic nightmare before it completely erases humanity from the planet. Cole struggles to unravel the mystery with his only two clues: a haunting childhood memory and a series of puzzling symbols from a group known only as The Army of the Twelve Monkeys.
Original movie producers Chuck Roven and Richard Suckle from Atlas Entertainment is attached to the project, with Terry Matalas (Nikita, Terra Nova) and Travis Fickett (Nikita, Terra Nova) will pen the script, with “24’s” Jon Cassar on board to direct.
Syfy president of original programming Mark Stern shared his thoughts on the exiting pilot:
“We have a great pilot, we’re now flushing out what the rest of the series might be,”
The series is set to be released in 2014
