There is a death in the Glee family. entertainment.time.com reported that Cory Monteith, 31, was found dead in his room at noon local time at the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel. Actress Lea Michele (Rachel Berry in the hit series Glee) was crushed by the news that her boyfriend has passed away. Hotel staff checked his room when he missed his checkout time, and discovered the body. He had been dead for several hours before he was found. The cause of death was not immediately apparent but police said there were no indications of foul play. They would not comment on speculation that he had died of a drug overdose.
Monteith had been out earlier in the night but returned to the room alone, police said. Acting Chief Doug LePard told a news conference:
“There were others with Mr Monteith in his room earlier last night, but video and fob key entries show him returning to his room by himself in the early morning hours and we believe he was alone when he died.”
An autopsy has been scheduled for today.
Monteith, led a troubled life who struggled with drugs during his teenage years and alcohol addiction. He was admitted to rehab when he was 19 after an intervention by family and friends. He later described that as a turning point in his life. After rehab he went on to obtain a high school diploma and started acting in 2005. In 2009 he was cast as Finn Hudson in Glee, which went on to become a smash hit in America and around the world.
He voluntarily admitted himself into a treatment facility on March 31, for substance addiction. His treatment was completed on April 26, 2013. He had previously talked about his addiction struggles, saying he had a serious problem and took just “anything and everything”.
In a statement on their “Glee” Twitter page, the executive producers of the show and Fox said they were “deeply saddened by this tragic news”.
“Cory was an exceptional talent and an even more exceptional person,” the Twitter message said. “He was a true joy to work with and we will all miss him tremendously. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones.”
