The history channel has had quite a bit ofsuccess with it’s Viking series. More than quite a bit actually. It is rated among the top 5 shows on TV. What is it about this series that have created such a quick following?

I started watching it expecing a low budget ‘Game of Thrones’ competitor. But, what I got was quite different. Granted this series is not on the same scale as Game of Thrones, but you get an awesome glimpse into the life of the viking people. How they lived, made war, believed.

Filmed in Ireland, Vikings is inspired by the tales about the Viking Ragnar Lodbrok, one of the best-known Norse heroes and notorious as the scourge of France and Britain. It portrays Ragnar as a Viking farmer who pioneers the first daring raids into Britain with the support of fellow warriors, his brother, and his wife, the shieldmaiden Lagertha.

You will definitely not be bored if you are considering picking up on this series. Here’s what they had to say:

Vikings is a win-win for us,” said History’s exec veep of development and programming Dirk Hoogstra. “As our first scripted series, Vikings has paid off in a big way with critical acclaim, strong ratings and a passionate, loyal fan base. It came out of the gate strong and has stayed on top, solidifying History as a major player in the scripted genre, just as we are in reality.

Currently on episode 5, I’m looking forward to see how this will end, knowing there will be a second season.
