After a long search for the actress to take the lead female role in the upcoming series Star Trek: Discovery, producers have cast Walking Dead star Sonequa Martin-Green in the role. CBS made a great choice, as she’s a solid actress who has done some great work. She will take on the role of the main character that the series revolves around, a lieutenant commander on the Discovery who will be referred to as “Number One”.

She joins the previously announced cast that includes Doug Jones as Lt. Saru, a Starfleet Science Officer; Anthony Rapp as Lt. Stamets, an astromycologist, fungus expert, and Starfleet Science Officer; and Michelle Yeoh as Starfleet captain Georgiou.

In case you’re wondering if this means Martin-Green’s character will be killed off on The Walking Dead, the answer is no. EW says that she will continue to serve as a series regular on the show. The report also makes a point to mention that Martin-Green “represents the first African-American woman to lead the cast of a Trek ensemble.”

Star Trek: Discovery will take place before the original Star Trek series, and it’s set to premiere in May on CBS before going to CBS All Access. What do you all think about Martin-Green landing the lead role in the series?
