Director Roland Emmerich has some really big shoes to fill with the reintroduction of one of the best know Alien invasion movie in Hollywood history. 1996’s “Independence Day” is one of the top movies of the 90’s, featuring Will Smith in the lead role as Steven Hiller. Unfortunately Captain Hiller will not be back in action, but we will see his son take over as the hero. Jessie Usher will play Dylan Hiller, “He grew up in the world that his Dad saved… It’s a lot of pressure,” Usher said of his character.
Emmerich was kind enough to share some details about the long gestating sequel in a live stream alongside the new cast members. Independence Day 2 is officially titled, “Independence Day: Resurgence“. We are also fortunate to get some info revealing the plot and details about the movie’s characters. The helmer hinted that the sequel would take place 20 years after the hostile alien attack which took place in the first film.

As for the cast, Usher will be joined by Liam Hemsworth, Maika Monroe and Sela Ward who also took part in the live stream. Hiller’s mother is played by Fox, who played Smith’s love interest in the first film.
Returning actors such as Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Brent Spiner and Judd Hirsch also joined the chat. There are a couple of additional changes in story moving forward, Pullman is not the president anymore, in the sequel, it is Ward who plays the new U.S. president.
Ward’s character works with the daughter of Pullman’s character played by Monroe, said about her role:
“Thanks to forward-thinking, non-sexist, socially responsible Roland Emmerich!”
“I work with Sela at the White House and have to live up to my dad. He was huge and I want to make him proud and I’m also a fighter pilot. I’m kind of a badass, I think,”
“Independence Day: Resurgence”is set to be released on June 24, 2016.
