As you know, Ridley Scott has been developing Blade Runner 2 with director Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners). It’s a sequel that a lot of fans have been looking forward to seeing. Harrison Ford is already set to reprise his role as Rick Deckard, and it looks like he will be joined by Ryan Gosling. Fans have been reacting quite strongly to the news, and while there’s a large group of fans that is piling on the hate, we feel it is a casting that may just be perfect.

Deadline is reporting that Gosling is in negotiations to join the film in a lead role. There are no details on the story or his character, but it takes place several decades after the end of the original 1982 film. Gosling has the perfect presence for a sci-fi noir film like Blade Runner 2. Gossling is just a talented actor. Blade Runner 2 starts shooting in the summer of 2016, and it will come from a script written by Hampton Fancher (co-writer of the original) and Michael Green.
Ryan has already dropped his pretty boy Hollywood persona with great films such as Drive, The Place Beyond The Pines, and Only God Forgives. How you can think any differently about this being a great casting after watching these films is beyond me. ‘Only God Forgives’ is written and almost shot in the same tone as the original Blade Runner. Both focus a lot on cinematography, the protagonist is mainly quiet, and you leave both wondering what the hell just happened.
Let’s be honest, this film is one big intense stare after the next, and Ryan hoes a stare absolutely as intense as you would expect from a replica. Blade Runner is one of my favorite films of all time, but Blade Runner’s success comes mainly from its sweeping visuals, captivating story, and intensity. Gosling is essentially at the point in his career Ford was back when he initially took the role, and we all know more likely than not he’s going to be a replicant.
