Guillermo del Toro is very generous with updates for his upcoming projects as of late. The legendary helmer recently sat with Collider to share some tidbits for “Pacific Rim 2“. He spilled the beans about who we can expect to reprise their roles for another epic adventure. Charlie Day’s Dr. Newton Geiszler and Burn Gorman’s Dr. Hermann Gottlieb has been confirmed to geek up the sci-fi action sequel. The frequent comedic inserts with Day and Gorman really strengthened “Pacific Rim’s” all-round appeal and well-rounded approach to one of the biggest blockbusters of 2013.

He said:

“It’s quite a different movie from the first one in that, but I think that two of our main characters like in the first one are Burn and Charlie,” “They are really, really – I mean, honestly, they are probably the guys I have the most fun writing along with Hannibal Chau so just from a purely selfish drive, I like writing them.” “I love writing for Charlie and Burn. I mean, [Burn’s] in ‘Crimson Peak’ for that reason, because I love working with him.”

He added about the expectations for the Kaijus and the Jaegers:

“You’re gonna get a lot of that, but the Kaijus are very different and you’re gonna see a very different type of the robots I think. It’s gonna be quite a different adventure.”

Del Toro also shared some details about the expected timeline for the sequel:

“It’s a few years after the first one. It’s not an immediate follow-up. It is the world having been freed of Kaiju, what happens to the world after – what happens to the Jaeger technology once the Kaiju are not a threat. It’s quite a jump.”

The helmer announced in June that “Pacific Rim 2”will go into development with Universal planning to release the sequel on April 7, 2017 in 3D and IMAX. An animated series based on the 2013 sci-fi movie is on the way, and the events are set to take place prior to the first movie. Del Toro writes the script with Zak Penn (“X-Men: The Last Stand”) with an eye on setting up the third installment in the process. Day and Gorman will be joined by Charlie Hunnam (Raleigh) and Rinko Kikuchi (Mako) for the follow-up movie.
