It was a tight race for the top spot at the box office over the weekend. Christopher Nolan’s epic sci-fi flick “Interstellar” and Disney’s “Big Hero 6” slugged it out in a tough battle for the box office crown. The Disney animation raked in an estimated $56.2 million while Nolan’s movie pulled in approximately $52.2 million.

The animation is an action-packed comedy-adventure about the special bond that develops between Baymax (voice of Scott Adsit), a plus-sized inflatable robot, and prodigy Hiro Hamada (voice of Ryan Potter). When a devastating event befalls the city of San Fransokyo and catapults Hiro into the midst of danger, he turns to Baymax and his close friends adrenaline junkie Go Go Tomago (voice of Jamie Chung), neatnik Wasabi (voice of Damon Wayans Jr.), chemistry whiz Honey Lemon (voice of Genesis Rodriguez) and fanboy Fred (voice of T.J. Miller). Determined to uncover the mystery, Hiro transforms his friends into a band of high-tech heroes called “Big Hero 6.”

“Interstellar” had a fantastic run despite the second place ranking this week. The film about an interstellar journey to discover new planets took in $13.4 million on 368 IMAX screens with a per-screen average of more than $36,000. Nolan’s space epic assisted with IMAX’s best opening for a November release to date. Rottentomatoes.com dished out a fresh rating for the Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway starring film, the Critics Consensus reads as follows:

“Interstellar represents more of the thrilling, thought-provoking, and visually resplendent filmmaking moviegoers have come to expect from writer-director Christopher Nolan, even if its intellectual reach somewhat exceeds its grasp.”

Ben Affleck’s “Gone Girl” earned $6.1 million in third place during its 6th week at the box office, followed by horror flick “Ouija” in 4th place with $6 million. The top 5 is rounded up by “St. Vincent” with an estimated $5.7 million.
