The last time we checked in on the latest developments for “Pacific Rim 2”, sci-fi master mind Guillermo del Toro said we can expect an epic Expanded Universe that will tie in the animated series and the ongoing comic books with the silver screen releases. Check out the full article HERE if you missed it. In a recent interview Del Toro revealed that he has additional plans to push the franchise forward for a second sequel. Speaking to Collider while promoting his newest film “The Book of Life”, he said:

“Some of your favorite characters come back, some others don’t because we have decided that we’re going to shoot ambitiously and say, ‘Let’s hope we have three movies,’ so some characters come in at the end of the second, hoping that it will ramp up on the third one,”

He also gave an update on the development of the upcoming sequel:

“We got the first draft of the movie now,” “and we are going to spend another 4-5 months on the screenplay before we start pre-production. We start pre-production next year in August-September and start shooting November-December next year.”

The helmer recently announced that “Pacific Rim 2”will go into development, with Universal planning to release the sequel on April 7, 2017 in 3D and IMAX. An animated series based on the 2013 sci-fi movie is on the way, and the events is set to take place prior to the first movie.
