There is a brand new scripted television series in the works over at Animal Planet that is focused on animal zombies of all things. ‘The Other Dead’ is set in Louisiana during the next “Hurricane Katrina” among a world full of undead animals and unrelenting natural disasters. It seems that Animal Planet is willing to take things up a notch, but will this sit well with most friends of the furry creatures?

IGN said the following about the upcoming series:

“The Other Dead, originally published by IDW Publishing in 2013, is a zombie tale from creators Joshua Ortega (Gears of War, Star Wars, Spider-Man) and Digger Mesch (Agent 88 and X-Men) with a twist, as an assorted cast of characters—including President Obama—fight to survive against nightmarish undead animals while beset by a hurricane in Louisiana.”

The animal zombie story was previously described to Comic Book Resources when they sat down with Ortega, he said about the characters:

“Into this mix is thrown our eclectic cast of characters: Tommy Romero, a 10-year old cancer survivor who’s struggling with his faith and belief in life; Azrael, Tommy’s older brother and a member of the Norwegian-like death metal band, Decapitated; Justina Abelinda Cortez, Az’s girlfriend who’s an exotic dancer and a Puerto Rican bruja/witch; Chet Wayne, a racist ex-Army Ranger who’s been preparing for the apocalypse for years; and Barack Obama – yes, the actual president of the United States – who ends up in the eye of the storm, dealing not only with the hurricane but the zombie animal outbreak as well,”

Ortega said about the collaboration with Animal Planet:

“The entire creative team could not be more excited about this partnership, and the timing for ‘The Other Dead’ series could not be more perfect. Zombie animal meets Animal Planet? Sounds like we have some serious undead fun ahead of us.” Meanwhile, Animal Planet Exec VP said, “This is an intriguing choice for Animal Planet as the network further branches out into different, dynamic genres.”

A Racist, cancer survivor, metal band member, stripper and Obama…….this is worth a shot no matter how knee jerky the concept is.  Aside from the fact that it sounds like the opening line from a bad joke, the diversity of the characters as pooled with the animal zombies might just be the fresh new thing in television we have been waiting for. Expect “The Other Dead” to find fresh meat in 2016.
