“Insidious” franchise scribe Leigh Whannell took to Twitter on June 25 to break the news that Dermot Mulroney will star in the third chapter.
She tweeted:
“HUGELY excited to officially announce that great actor/great human Dermot Mulroney has been cast as one of the leads in Insidious Chapter 3!”
The first two horror movies starred Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne as a couple who had to deal with the demonic possession of their son. Supported by Lin Shaye, Ty Simpkins and Barbara Hershey, the franchise has been extremely profitable. The first installment grossed $97 million worldwide, while the sequel tripled the earnings with $297,3 million. “Insidious Chapter 2” ($41 M) debuted as the second-highest movie opening ever in a September last year, behind 2012’s animated “Hotel Transylvania” ($42.5M).
Horror master and visionary director James Wan will not be returning for the third installment. Whannell is set to make her directing debut in the movie, which Focus Features plans to release April 3, 2015. No plot details are available for the third installment set to start production on July 7.
While it’s unconfirmed if the previous stars of the franchise will return, Mulroney joins newcomer “Jem and the Holograms” star Stefanie Scott for the third chapter. Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Productions, which produced the first two movies, are producing the next installment along with Oren Peli and James Wan.
