“The Amazing Spider-Man 2” couldn’t live up to the enormous returns of its Marvel movie predecessors “Spider-Man”, “Spider-Man 3” and “Iron Man”, but the superhero pic still opened strong over the weekend. Marc Web’s sequel to “The Amazing Spider-Man” grossed approximately $91,6 domestically on its debut weekend. The second installment is also the second highest-grossing domestic opener this year after “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”. Cap took $95 million last month, edging ahead slightly with only $3.4 million.

Internationally, Spidey’s sequel opened two weeks ago raking in $116 million for a foreign total of $277 million, and global haul of $369 million. The sequel is already exceeding financial expectations compared to the first installment in some markets. China posted record ticket sales on Sunday, raking in $10.4 million, making the Marvel pic a best seller for a designated workday.
“The Amazing Spider-Man 2” is followed by last week’s number one contender “The Other Woman (2014)” adding an additional $14,4 million. The film tells the story of three women who team up to plot mutual revenge on their cheating boyfriend /husband. The comedy starring Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton grossed $93 million worldwide in only two weeks since its release.
“Heaven is for Real” retains its position in third place compared to last week taking an estimated $8,6 million, while the second Marvel pic on the list, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” takes the fourth spot with $7,8 million. The top five is rounded up with the family animated flick “Rio 2”, sliding down one spot to no.5 this week with $7,7 million.
