It comes as no surprise after the huge opening for “Insidious Chapter 2” that a third “Insidious” movie is in the works. On a budget of $5 million, the sequel opened in its first weekend debuting at No. 1 with more than $40 million at the domestic box office. This is an impressive achievement, boasting as one of the best openers for a horror movie and posts the second-highest debut ever for a September release.

The first installment grossed $97 million worldwide. The sequel tripled the earnings with $297,3 million

Jason Blum, producer of the two previous movies expresses his gratitude for the massive response saying:

“FilmDistrict, eOne and SPWA have been incredible partners on the Insidious franchise,”

“We are all so grateful for how audiences embraced James Wan and Leigh’s (Whannell) latest film and are excited to see what Leigh has in store for the third chapter.”

Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne reprised their roles to lead “Insidious Chapter 2”, which follows the Lamberts as they move into a new house, not realizing the demons have followed them after their confrontation with the evil spirits in the first movie.

"Insidious Chapter 2" ($41 M) debuted as September's second-highest movie opening ever behind 2012's animated "Hotel Transylvania" ($42.5M)

Director James Wan will not be returning for the third installment according to Moviefone.com.  In July he stated that he will not be directing horror films anymore saying:

“I’m going to go on record and say I am finished with the horror genre. Conjuring and Insidious 2 are my two last scary movies,”

“I spent the last ten years of my life doing this. It’s time for a change, for goodness sake!…Hollywood puts you in a box. If you do a successful comedy, then you’re known as The Comedy Guy. If you do a successful car chase movie, then you become that guy. So I’m a student of cinema, so I just want to make sure I get the chance to make other kinds of films.”

Wan’s “The Conjuring”, is another huge horror success story this year, grossing $297,3 million worldwide.

Leigh Whannell, who wrote the scripts for the first and second films will be back to pen the script for the third installment.

Wan will not be taking a break and as promised, he is broadening his scope. He is currently directing the sequel to the very popular fast car movie franchise “Fast and Furious 7” with Vin Diesel and Paul Walker.
