Sony announced their SmartWatch 2 earlier Today, a smartphone specifically made for Android. We must say it looks amazing. It’s a “second screen” for your Android device and completely splash proof (it will survive a rainstorm, but don’t take it in the shower or pool).

The NFC-enabled SmartWatch 2 includes a 1.6-inch, 220-by-176-pixel color display that users can swipe through to read, even in sunlight. Sony framed the SmartWatch 2 as an easy way to complete tasks when your smartphone is out of reach: answer a call with the touch your wrist; take a photo remotely using the camera app; adjust the volume or track on your music player; or use it as a fitness tracker in conjunction with apps like Runtastic.
Users can also access Facebook and Twitter, and scroll through missed calls or get texts.
Sony’s smartwatch will be compatible with devices running Android 4.0 and later, as well as Bluetooth 3.0.
Sony said the SW2 will provide the longest battery life of any smartwatch on the market, with five to six days for low usage and three to four days of typical usage.
Sony plans to have the SmartWatch 2 on store shelves across the world in September of this year, but it’s not ready to say how much it will cost when it arrives. With impressive competitors such as Pebble — and the ever present rumors of smartwatches from the likes of Apple and Google — the SmartWatch 2 had better live up to Sony’s claims that it has improved if it is to be a success.
Personally we’re giving this emerging market some more time to develop before we jump into it and get one of our own. From what we’ve seen from all the smartphones out there it really works well but the OS still looks crappy. We want somebody to come along and blast this out of the water concerning design, OS, streamline and plain beauty.
