James Gunn’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” is gaining popularity on all fronts, and it’s now taking over the Billboard charts with its official soundtrack. The record titled “Awesome Mix Vol. 1” is following in the footsteps of Disney’s “Frozen (2013)” soundtrack which spent 13 weeks atop of the charts. “Awesome Mix Vol. 1” debuted at No. 3 with 60 000, and sold 109,000 copies in the week ending August 10 according to Nielsen SoundScan. The soundtrack spent its second week at No. 1 after selling another 93,000 copies.

Reaching the top of the Billboard 200 chart, the “Guardians of the Galaxy” soundtrack becomes the first soundtrack album in history consisting entirely of previously released songs to top the chart. Featuring smash hits from Blue Swede, David Bowie, The Jackson 5, The Runaways, Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell to name a few, movie geeks are storming record stores for a copy!
