Geeks following the “Star Wars: Episode 7” production progress will be familiar with the ongoing rumors suggesting that popular characters in the franchise will be getting their own movies. Bounty Hunter Boba Fett, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker and Jedi master Yoda will likely receive the spin-off treatment, with no less than three spin-off movies scheduled to be released in between the main installments. Disney confirmed the exciting news earlier this month, and now, more news have been made available by the studio and Lucasfilm. “Godzilla” helmer Gareth Edwards has officially been hired to direct a “Star Wars” spin-off. The announcement was made on the official Star Wars website on Thursday, May 22.
The announcement reads:
“In addition to the episodes of a new Star Wars trilogy, Lucasfilm and Disney have begun development on multiple stand-alone movies that will offer new stories beyond the core Saga,” says the press release. “Gareth Edwards will direct the first stand-alone film, with a screenplay by Gary Whitta (Book of Eli). The film is due out December 16, 2016.”
A very excited Edwards said in a statement after the announcement:
“Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life – join the Rebel Alliance!” “I could not be more excited & honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm.”
Legendary Entertainment’s Thomas Tull who produced “Godzilla” also commented:
“Gareth’s filmmaking talent makes him one of his generation’s most creative and visionary directors. The plan has always been for Gareth to direct a different film before we started on another Godzilla, but who knew it would a Star Wars installment? We have a great plan in store for Godzilla fans and I am looking forward to seeing Gareth’s imprint on the Star Wars universe.”
The first untitled “Star Wars” spin-off to be helmed by Edwards is set to be released on December 16, 2016. No further details have been released, GS will keep you posted.
