J.J. Abrams’ “Star Wars” trilogy spinoff movies is rumored to center around young Han Solo and Boba Fett. According to Variety.com the films are set to be “origin story films”. In 2016, we’ll get a “Star Wars” spinoff movie, written and produced by either Lawrence Kasdan or Simon Kinberg with each writer working on a film that’ll focus on a specific “Star Wars character”. The spin-off movies will be released between episodes of the new trilogy.
Disney’s Chief Financial Officer Jay Rasulo mentioned the sci-fi franchise has huge potential:
Rasulo said:
“The market is extremely hot for everything ‘Star Wars’.” Calling the franchise an “evergreen property,” he stated, “Of all our worries, ‘Star Wars’ is not one of them.”
He addressed concerns that the younger kids might not be familiar with the films, the CFO explained:
“This is not a new franchise for kids,”
“The sky’s the limit,”
“There’s incredible flexibility. It’s an unbelievable palette to create from.”
He also stated that there is room for growth.
The financial losses of “The Lone Ranger” is still looming, the studio heads are all too aware of the costs moving forward with big budget projects, Rasulo admitted:
“there needs to be a cap on tentpole franchise movies.”
“Going forward, we will see a cap on spending on those movies,”
As for the “Star Wars” venture the overall strategy is “to put out a great film”, expand and broaden the franchise merchandise categories. This will be a safe bet to say that 35-years of exposure and an ongoing legacy should be a very lucrative venture for Disney moving forward.
Hopefully soon we will have more information explaining the direction for the stand-alone movies. GeekShizzle will keep you posted.
The upcoming sequel is slated for a December 2015 release, followed by “Star Wars Episode 8” in 2017 and “Star Wars Episode 9” in 2019
Star Wars Episode 7 is one of the most anticipated releases for 2015
