Variety.com reports that Lionsgate is developing a supernatural thriller set in the Vatican titled “White Smoke”. The godfather of scary movies Jason Blum (“Insidious”, “Paranormal Activity”) has signed on as producer alongside Kevin McCormick (“Gangster Squad”). Jeff Richard and Mark Bianculli is onboard as scribes. The story centers a “series of bizarre and haunting occurrences that grip the Vatican. A renowned neuroscientist is summoned by the inner circle of cardinals to find a logical explanation.” For those unfamiliar with the significance of what white smoke means, it’s the sign from the Vatican that a new Pope has been chosen.
Blum’s “Insidious Chapter 2” is a huge success, opening to an impressive $41 million in early September. Made on a mere budget of $5 million, it marked the third-biggest debut for a pure horror film and the second-highest opening for a September release. This is a noteworthy project to keep on our radar. Strap in people, with Blum onboard we can expect another chiller on the way.
