Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim is making a slow climb at the Box office, and what everyone suspected to be a massive earning blockbuster machine is barely escaping the “tanking” label. This is thanks to worldwide earnings after earnings in the U.S. flopped. But, Guillermo del Toro remains a great director, and he’s been behind some of our favorite movies. So what can we expect next from him? Guillermo is known for changing his style and direction drastically, and keeping up with what he his is actually busy with is a bit of a challenge. Nonetheless:
10 Exciting upcoming movie Projects from Guillermo del Toro:
1. Trollhunters
Guillermo del Toro will write and direct his own feature for Dreamworks Animation called Trollhunters. The film is based on a young adult novel that del Toro submitted to publisher Hyperion. Said del Toro:
“I wanted very much to develop a story that could be written for kids but dealt with a genre that was scary,” he said. “It essentially combines fairy tales with modern times and is about how difficult it is to be kid. Normally, kids are idealized in animated films. But the growing pains, married with the notion that there is a world right next to us that is completely plagued by creatures of ancient lore, it’s thematically fitting with the rest of my stuff.”
There hasn’t been any fresh news on Trollhunters the entire year, so we are in doubts whether this film is actually still going ahead.
2. Pinocchio
This is going to be a 3D-stop-motion animated film based on the classic Carlo Collodi story as illustrated by Cris Grimly. Del Toro co-directs with Mark Gustafson. The animation is co-produced by Shadowmachine and Jim Henson Company. This is not to be confused with Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Jr. version of the wooden puppet. A few screenshots have been released on Guillermo’s depiction, and we are loving what we’re seeing!
3. The Strain
Release date: 2014/07
The Strain will be a TV movie that has genuinely garnered our interest, here’s the synopsis:
A Boeing 777 arrives at JFK and is on its way across the tarmac, when it suddenly stops dead. All window shades are pulled down. All lights are out. All communication channels have gone quiet. Crews on the ground are lost for answers, but an alert goes out to the CDC. Dr. Ephraim “Eph” Goodweather, head of their Canary project, a rapid-response team that investigates biological threats, gets the call and boards the plane. What he finds makes his blood run cold.
In a pawnshop in Spanish Harlem, a former professor and survivor of the Holocaust named Abraham Setrakian knows something is happening. And he knows the time has come, that a war is brewing.
So begins a battle of mammoth proportions as the vampiric virus that has infected New York begins to spill out into the streets. Eph, who is joined by Setrakian and a motley crew of fighters, must now find a way to stop the contagion and save his city – a city that includes his wife and son – before it is too late.

4. The Incredible Hulk (Tv Series)
Release date: 2014
Del Toro will be executive producer for one episode only. Rumours are that Mark Ruffalo, who played the Hulk in Avengers is involved in this series. If he does reprise the role in this animated TV Series it would be every fanboy’s dream come true.
5. At the Mountains of Madness
This project has been on and off more than a kitchen light switch. Even with James Cameron coming on board, in what could be the coolest collaboration ever, this project is forever hanging in the balance of seeing the silver screen or falling into the “what could have been” pool of death. The Movie is based on a H.P. Lovecraft sci-fi fantasy. On an Antarctic expedition, a group of explorers discover an ancient civilization and accidentally awaken its inhabitants.
Tom Cruise has been rumoured to star in this if it ever goes ahead. Update back in January this year, ”I’m going to try it one more time. Once more into the dark abyss,” he laughed. “We’re gonna do a big presentation of the project again at the start of the year and see if any [studio’s] interested.” And yes, Tom Cruise is still game to be on board if they can find a home for it. “Yeah, Tom is still attached. I think it would be so fantastic to make it with him. He’s been such a great ally of the project.
6. Book of Life
Release Date: October 2014
Originally titled Day of the Dead, after the famous Mexican celebration, the movie’s title is now Book of Life. “a Romeo and Juliet-style love story set against a Mexican Day of the Dead backdrop”. This is about all we know about this project at this stage.
7. Alma

Tells the story of children facing the specter of dark forces. Del Toro will produce and godfather the film, which is based on a short about a young girl who gets lured into an enchanted toy store, drawn in by its beautiful collection of dolls, including one that looks just like her. She discovers only too late that the shop is nefariously intent on adding her to its permanent collection. This is another animated film associated through Dream Works Animation.
Here’s the amazing short:
8. Crimson Peak
Release Date: 2015
We really look forward to this one. according to Del Toro:
“Crimson Peak is a very set-oriented, classical but at the same time modern take on the ghost story. It will allow me to play with the conventions of the genre I know and love, and at the same time subvert the old rules.”
This is probably his “immediate” next project he will give all his attention to after Pacific Rim. The film is in the midst of pre-production and is expected to start shooting in February 2014. The project already boasts a dream cast that includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska and “Pacific Rim” star Charlie Hunnam.
I think it’s really gothic in the trappings. There are a couple of really sick characters in it. Really, really twisted characters.”
9. Kung Fu Panda 3
Release Date: 2015
Kung Fu Panda 3 was scheduled to be released on March 18, 2016. The film is directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson and produced by Melissa Cobb, written by Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger with Guillermo del Toro as executive producer.Del Toro said in an interview that the antagonist is “the most formidable villain yet“.On April 9, 2013, it was announced that the film’s release date has been pushed up from March 18, 2016, to December 23, 2015.
The third Kung Fu Panda is on it’s way where Angeline Jolie will voice Tigress again, this will be one of her “comeback” movies.
10. Dark Universe aka Justice League Dark
Release Date: ???
Guillermo Del Toro will direct Dark Universe based on the comic series ‘Justice League Dark’. The supernatural fantasy brings together DC’s anti-heroes. The film will follow John Constantine (who, Del Toro promises, will be blond this time) as its protagonist, and will include the previously announced Swamp Thing, the Demon, Deadman, the Spectre and Zatanna as well. Does this sound freaking awesome or what?
“He is basically trying to recruit,” says Del Toro of the “Hellblazer” hero.
Though the film’s through-line will feature Jason Blood’s history with Merlin and the Knights of King Arthur, bringing a threat to present day. Del Toro stressed that he didn’t want any of the heroes’ origins to be delivered up front and, instead, will be explored throughout the film.
“Swamp Thing is at peace with who he is,” says Del Toro, “but Deadman is still trying to find out who shot him.”
We’re so excited about this movie, expect an upcoming post on the Justice League Dark soon!
One thing we know for sure is why Guillermo is doing the movies he is currently doing:
“All I know is that the movies I do, I do for one reason – because no one else is doing them.”
