Christian Bale delivered a stellar performance when he played the character Dicky Eklund, the washed-up boxer who use to be a promising prize boxer turned crack addict whose only hope is to pass his knowledge of the rugged sport to his half brother. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role when he collaborated with David O. Russell. Bale is the very definition of a serious method actor, he lost 29 kg (63 lb) for “The Machinist”. Bale surprised us again when he underwent another drastic transformation for “The Fighter”.
This time round, not so coincidentally, Bale has once again undergone a drastic change in his physical appearance, and he has teamed up again with David O. Russell for “American Hustle”. Bale had to bulk up, get fat, and go bald for his role as Irving Rosenfeld. Considering his previous transformations, a double cheese burger and fries might be a little easier to deal with as appose to the starvation and physical decay.
As always Bale is totally committed by bringing the character to life visually. He had to trade the billionaire playboy look for a mustache, beard, and shaved head (at times a wig was required to film American Hustle to complete the look).
American Hustle tells the story of brilliant con man Irving Rosenfeld (Bale), who along with his equally cunning British partner and lover Sydney Prosser (Adams) is forced to work for a wild unhinged FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Cooper).DiMaso pushes them into a world of Jersey powerbrokers and mafia that’s as dangerous as it is enchanting. Renner is Carmine Polito, the passionate, volatile, New Jersey political operator caught between the con-artists and Feds. Irving’s unpredictable wife Rosalyn (Lawrence) could be the one to pull the thread that brings the entire world crashing down. Oscar fever is nothing new for O. Russell and Bale. They are a winning combination and hopefully the formula to their success will see them through once more. David O. Russell’s movies receive critical acclaim for being original and from the heart. He recently made the headlines with ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ and GS will not be surprised if American Hustle reels in another Oscar for a leading actor.
