After the bastardized version of the character that appeared in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the Merc with a Mouth finally got redemption with last year’s Deadpool. The film was a major gamble on behalf of all involved, but it turned out to be a resounding success, becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie to date and earning its place on numerous best of 2016 lists.

Now, almost a year after its release, production on the sequel is starting to heat up. Deadpool 2 faced some minor hurdles early on, losing director Tim Miller and composer Junkie XL, but everything seems to be back on track now. Presumably, Fox is busy casting the supporting roles and while a number of actors and actresses have been linked to various parts, nothing’s been confirmed just yet.

One person who’s certainly hoping that the studio gives them a call though is Leslie Jones. The Saturday Night Live actress impressed with her performance in Ghostbusters last year and is now becoming a pretty hot commodity in Hollywood. She doesn’t have too much lined up for the future just yet, but if Jones gets her way, she’ll be starring alongside Ryan Reynolds in 20th Century Fox’s upcoming sequel.

After voicing her interest in the film a month or so back, she’s now spoken up again. While appearing on Late Night with Seth Meyers, the actress mentioned that she’d love to be a sidekick in Deadpool 2.

“In Deadpool I would love to be just the sidekick. Just feeding him back the lines. It would just be so fun.”

With the sequel already reportedly set to feature both Domino and Cable, there may not be room for another main character. That doesn’t mean Jones can’t be involved in a cameo capacity, though, or perhaps in a minor role. The studio could also take some liberties and cast the actress as Domino. In all likelihood, however, if Fox wants Jones in the franchise, they’ll probably wait until the already in-development Deadpool 3 to cast her, where she can have a meatier part and her talents can be put to better use.

If one thing’s for certain, it’s that the actress’ sense of humor is definitely well suited to the Merc with a Mouth’s universe and there are at least a few characters from the comics that we can see her playing. It may not happen in Deadpool 2, but as Jones’ profile continues to rise, don’t be too surprised if she makes her way into a future sequel.
