We’ll see another year of major reboots, sequels and some prequels for some of our favorite horror movie franchises. Yeah..yeah.. we know exactly how uninspiring it is to see a lack of original source material but come on, some of these films might stand a chance of contributing to an already epic stable of blood gushing horror brilliance! We’ll be nice this time round and give the boys the benefit of the doubt. In all honesty there are some movies franchises on our list that should have been committed to memory and filed under “Don’t Touch…..Ever!”, but seeing a digitally remastered version of a cult classic with some fresh ideas might be fun. Like I said, benefit of the doubt.

Don’t miss our TOP OF GEEK posts for more top lists!!!

4. The Mummy

The Mummy

There is finally a reason to get excited about a reboot of a cult classic movie franchise.  Helmed by Alex Kurtzman, 2017’s “The Mummy” is set to be the official reboot of “The Mummy” franchise. It also serves as the first installment in the Universal Monsters shared universe that will see the reintroduction of classic films such as Frankenstein’s monster, Count Dracula, the Wolf Man, Gill-man, the Invisible Man, Bride of Frankenstein and Van Helsing. The Mummy boasts with a very impressive star-studded cast which includes the likes of Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella, Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson, Courtney B. Vance and Russell Crowe. Universal Pictures says the new movie is an “action-adventure tentpole with horror elements”, so naturally Tom Cruise is an excellent choice to reintroduce the new take on the once beloved franchise.

5. Alien: Covenant

Alien: Covenant

After years of speculation and flaming wars about the terrible ending of 2012’s “Promethius” emerges a film to serve as both a prequel to Ridely Scott’s 1979 classic “Alien” and a sequel to “Alien” prequel movie Prometheus. We can finally piece together the things that were never explained in the controversial 2012 flick that was rumored to be the prequel to Ridely Scott’s iconic alien horror movie franchise. TheWrap says screenwriter Michael Green will aim to be much more “alien-y” in this sequel and in line with the terrifying tone of past films in the franchise. Additionally, the sequel is expected to feature multiple ‘David’ androids, which means there will be more than one Michael Fassbender on-screen at the same time.

Release date: Friday, May 19, 2017

Plot summary: Trailer

“Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created in ALIEN with Alien: Covenant, the second chapter in a prequel trilogy that began with Prometheus — and connects directly to Scott’s 1979 seminal work of science fiction. Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world — whose sole inhabitant is the “synthetic” David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.”

6. Friday the 13th

Friday the 13th

Fans of the cult classic horror movie will finally get the answer to the most burning question about the infamous killer Jason Vorhees! THR says helmer David Bruckner “is expected to employ the found-footage technique and answer the decades-old question of why slasher Jason Voorhees can’t be killed.” How many times have we seen this blood thirsty monster “die” but reappear to terrorize unsuspecting victims? That would be a cool question to answer, but more importantly we will get to know the character better in the brand new gory film coming next year! Bruckner is the talent behind “Amateur Night” in V/H/S, so we are set for something special and hopefully a fresh spin on an old school baddy.

Release date: Friday, October 13, 2017

Plot summary:

TBA

7. World War Z 2

World War Z 2

It is Brad Pitt VS Zombies again in what is pitched as a sequel that will align more closely with Max Brooks’s World War Z novels. The underwhelming first installment received mixed reviews with most zombie fans finding it more worthwhile watching and episode of Rick and the survivors of The Walking Dead to get their undead gory fix. Hopefully this time round we will get to see the blood, guts and gore shifted in to high gear.

Release date: Friday, June 9, 2017

Plot summary:

TBA

As The Oatmeal humorously points out, there are many plot points from the Max Brooks’s World War Z novel that were not touched on in the first World War Z movie. World War Z 2 could follow on directly from the ending of World War Z, but writer Steven Knight hinted that the sequel may take a different starting point entirely:

”I thought, ‘why not? What fun.’ It’s not quite like the other, we’re starting with clean slate. When they’ve signed off we’re on.”

World War Z 2 could set a great deal of its action in India, one of the most cramped and devastated areas affected by the outbreak in the novel, and hardly mentioned in the first World War Z movie. The World War Z movies are set to form a trilogy, with Paramount saying:

”View ‘World War Z’ as a trilogy that would have the grounded, gun-metal realism of Matt Damon’s Jason Bourne series tethered to the unsettling end-times vibe of AMC’s ‘The Walking Dead'”.

8. Resident Evil: The Final Chapter

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter

We almost hate the fact that “Resident Evil” is back with another movie, but the Capcom game based movie series is still the most successful video game film franchise in the world to date. The hugely popular video game series will kick off one final installment to wrap up things, with Alice returning to the hive where everything started. We don’t need a lot of motivation to see Milla Jovovich back as Alice kicking ass in a tight outfit, even though there is a big possibility that the movie might be as terrible as the previous installment.

Release date: Friday, January 27, 2017

Plot summary: Trailer

“Picking up immediately after the events in Resident Evil: Retribution, Alice (Milla Jovovich) is the only survivor of what was meant to be humanity’s final stand against the undead. Now, she must return to where the nightmare began – The Hive in Raccoon City, where the Umbrella Corporation is gathering its forces for a final strike against the only remaining survivors of the apocalypse.”

9. Amityville: The Awakening

Amityville: The Awakening

Back in 2013 it was announced that there would be a new film in the long running Amityville horror franchise. Oscar nominee Jennifer Jason Leigh takes on the role as single mom Joan, who just moved into her new home with her three kids. At the center of the story is Cameron Monaghan’s character James, a comatose patient who requires constant care. The new home is a house of horrors and now Joan and her family will experience firsthand why the infamous house is well-known for all the wrong reasons. It seems like much of the same storytelling for this horror franchise but we have hope because Monaghan’s character is set as the killer. Bella Thorne stars as Joan’s daughter Belle, who is most likely the heroine of the sequel in the rebooted horror franchise.

Release date: Friday, June 30, 2017

Plot summary: Trailer

“Belle and her family move into a new house, but when strange phenomena begin to occur in the house, Belle begins to suspect her Mother isn’t telling her everything and soon realizes they just moved into the infamous Amityville house.”

10. Rings

Rings

Some might say that “Rings” is an arbitrary brand extension of one of the scariest movie franchises to hit the big screen. It is the third feature-length film in the “Ring” (American) franchise, directly following “The Ring” and “The Ring Two”. The trailer for the third instalment suggests that we are in for much of the same stuff the first two films produced, but with a contemporary spin to recapture the Nostalgia of the once epic horror franchise. Not much is known about Spanish film director F. Javier Gutiérrez who is responsible for spearheading the modern take of the film based on the 1998 Japanese psychological horror film of the same name. Some might also say this is the first warning sign that this movie has the potential to suck! He did however team up to be a part of James Wan’s “Demonic” (2015) as co-producer, but critics didn’t find much reason to be excited about the supernatural horror flick. Mmmm…..

Release date: Friday, February 3, 2017

Plot Summary: Trailer

“A young woman becomes worried about her boyfriend when he explores a dark subculture surrounding a mysterious videotape said to kill the watcher seven days after he has viewed it. She sacrifices herself to save her boyfriend and in doing so makes a horrifying discovery: there is a “movie within the movie” that no one has ever seen before… “
