There are many reasons to appreciate, adore and love our favorite TV comedy shows, but most of the time there are a couple of characters that push things to the next level. I am talking about the “Wildcards”, those crazy let’s do anything at any time kind of characters who create plot twists and ignite the funny! We definitely forgot about one or two wildcards on our list, so please chime in and let us know in the comments section who deserves to be here.

1. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia – Charlie

Charlie

Charlie

He is the official janitor of Paddy’s Pub even though he did not choose the position. The self-proclaimed “wildcard” of the series has a pretty bad run most days by doing countless hours of “Charlie work”, but he’s always willing to beat the system with an elaborate scheme. Eating cat food to fall asleep while sharing a bed next to Frank, a 50+ year old guy trying to recapture his youth seems harsh, but Charlie enjoys it on some level. His idiosyncrasies lead to unimaginable misadventures with “the gang”, his childhood friends with whom he used the own the bar he is working in as a janitor. On some level, each member of the gang is capable of playing the role of the wildcard in each episode. We love Charlie because he is crazy, stupid and always willing to do anything, even it means being beaten to a pulp, drinking or eating disgusting things.

2. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia – Frank

Frank

Frank

Even though each member of the group in It’s Always Sunny is capable of playing the wildcard, roommates Frank and Charlie are most likely to stir the pot. Charlie is Frank’s apparent biological son and the father of twins Dee and Dennis, or so he thought. He is a rich man with no shame to spend money on hookers and “gang” related get rich schemes that usually involve other people getting screwed. He is a racist, money hungry gambler willing to do anything to make money, even if it means that he needs to use his own friends and family to make a quick buck. We love Frank because he always convinces Charlie to do something stupid, he knows how to manipulate the gang to do something to make him some cash, and because it’s Dani Devito playing the character!

3. American Dad – Roger

Roger

Roger

Roger is an alien that best describes himself as a “fey pansexual alcoholic non-human”. The flamboyant alcoholic being from outer space is best known for his character role-playing and disguises to hide from the CIA department tasked to find and kill aliens. He is forced to hide out most of the time and while boredom sets in, Roger resorts to tantrums, elaborate pranks and general bad behaviour to spice things up. We love Roger because he is sneaky, vindictive, selfish and always ready to get up to mischief.

4. Archer – Sterling Archer

Archer

Archer

Archer is a selfish ass with a narcissistic nature due to the fact that his mother never really loved him while he was growing up. Mommy issues aside, he is “the world’s greatest spy”, or so he says, and he is willing to do anything to up his status. Each mission ends in almost killing himself and his fellow agents because he insists on doing things that keeps him in the “danger zone”. He is a skilled killer and raging alcoholic with a unique way of endangering himself and everyone around him. We love Archer because he never sticks to the plan, he improvises to save the day no matter the cost, and he knows how to piss-off every person he gets in contact with.

5. South Park – Cartman

Cartman

Cartman

The fat kid from South Park that requires no introduction will always be one of the best TV comedy wildcards. His vindictive, anti-Semitic and overall cruel nature makes for some very entertaining episodes on one of the most popular animated TV shows in history. We love Cartman because there is nothing he hasn’t done to make himself the king of South Park. Think of every conceivable bad thing a TV character can do to people to be the most hated individual.  He is a clever sociopath with psychotic tendencies willing to kill, steel and extort himself all the way to the top of the food chain.

6. Simpsons – Homer

Homer

Homer

Everybody’s favorite TV dad is as gullible as he is stupid. Those two things make Homer Simpson an excellent wildcard with the ability to get himself, his friends and family in a lot of trouble. We love Homer because most of the time he creates enough chaos by just showing up at work or being part of his family. We love him because being “Homer stupid”, or gullible, will always lead to some scenario that leaves a trail of destruction.

7. Blue Mountain State – Thad

Thad

Thad

The inspiring team captain of the BMS football team is an annoying bully willing to do absolutely anything to ensure a victory. Despite his love for “The Goats”, his football team, he almost always finds a way to mess up things even though he does things to put his teammates ahead of the competition. Team building events always involves some form of weird rituals, derived from desperate situations and incident which causes chaos and disruption in the team’s plans. We love Thad because he always goes one step too far in everything he does to better himself and “The Goats”. Nothing gets in his way to achieve greatness, even if it means he has to “oil change” the entire team to have clean urine for drug tests, hide used condoms in his mount to avoid baby scandals, and mash cookies in his butt and eat it to prove a point.

8. Blue Mountain State – Sammy

Sammy

Sammy

The Blue Mountain State Mascot grew up with Starting Quarterback Alex Moran, but never cracked it at being part of a football team. Despite the fact that he managed to blackmail his way to become the Mascot, Sammy commits to his duty no matter what the cost. He is always trying to sleep with the cheerleaders and finds any excuse to get drunk. We love Sammy because he is a complete idiot, willing to do anything to be part of the team. His misadventures always involves an elaborate scheme so stupid it’s almost genius.

9. Arrested Development – Gob

Gob

Gob

Arrested Development has the ability to transform everyday family life and make it a laugh a minute TV show with hilarious pop culture references. Gob is one of the family members with the ability to spice up things with his crazy magic tricks that never seem to amaze anyone, unless you think that sinking the family yacht is a neat disappearing act. He is always plotting to take over the family business but lacks the skill, dedication and work ethic to pull it off. We love Gob because he does the perfect chicken dance (watch the show!), he loves and hates his family, and he will do literately anything to be in his father’s good books.

10. Family Guy – Peter

Peter

Peter

Peter is the perfect example of the lazy dad that watches TV all day while drinking beer. His general stupidity and over ambitious ideas about basically everything creates havoc and leaves a trail of funny incidents. He is an accident-prone alcohol abuser with no ambition, and loves to try and prove that his wife Louise is wrong about everything. We love Peter because his attempts to better himself or prove his masculinity makes him a very potent wildcard.

11. The League – Rafi

Rafi

Rafi

Rafi is definitely certifiable and probably one of the best wildcard characters ever created. Fans of the popular FX TV show will agree that Rafi is one of the reasons why “The League” is so damn funny. He will masturbate anywhere without warning, use any illegal substances to have a good time, shoot porno movies in any location, and as always, irritate the guys that form part of the fantasy football league in the show. We love Rafi because anything is possible with this guy at any time without warning.

12. The League – Taco

Taco

Taco

“The League” in general is an amazing show with so many pop culture references and sharp witted comments that it doesn’t necessarily need a boost in the crazy/funny department. Taco provides that extra bit of craziness to boost a very funny show that is still one of my personal favorites. He is the official owner and CEO of TacoCorp, a company with no purpose. Taco loves business ventures and get rich quick schemes that always interferes with everyone no matter the cost or trail of destruction that is left behind. He is the proud owner of Myface, ‘The Pee Bib’, ‘The Brown Note’ and The Eskimo Brothers Database Bed and Breakfast to name a few. We love Taco because he eventually becomes very rich twice in the show by fluke based on his crazy ideas which always involves messing around with the guys in “The League”.

13. How I Met Your Mother – Barney

Barney

Barney

We are almost sure that Barney has written a book on how to be an effective wildcard but he hasn’t published his findings yet. Neil Patrick Harris’ career took flight when he was cast as the womanizing party starter that insists that suits are the key to most successful encounters, even a suit styled pyjama ensemble is part of his collection. We love Barney because he is always ready to take on any adventure at the drop of a hat, no questions asked, no matter the cost!

14. New Girl – Nick

Nick

Nick

Trust Nick with random ideas to throw a spanner in the works with his laid back approach to any problem which normally ends with hilarious consequences. The law school dropout from one of our favorite TV shows is an excellent wildcard because his sense of logic is so off centre it’s almost genius. We love Nick because he is always doing the direct opposite of the expectation to solve simple problems and he always finds a way to frustrate and irritate his roommates with his unplanned problem solving skills. His jerry-rigging skills to fix broken things in the apartment, his inability to lie and sarcastic nature is a real treat.

15. New Girl – Winston

Winston

Winston

The man responsible for “The classic Winston mess-around” is one of Nick’s roommates. Winston is easily roped in to take part in anything stupid which normally ends with funny scenarios involving Nick (also his childhood friend) and the rest of his roommates. He unknowingly lost his virginity to a “professional” which Nick’s dad organised for both him and Nick when they were teenagers. We love Winston because he is literally up for any random task, not even finding a blood thirsty badger in an air vent whilst a wedding is in progress is enough to steer him away from danger. He is the self-proclaimed “Prank Sinatra”, and he always goes too far to up his game
