5 Movies You Missed and Need to Watch Right Now!

1. Ex Machina (2015)

Ex Machina (2015)

We are positive that Oscar Isaac’s Nathan Bateman in Ex Machina succeeded in building the perfect geek dream girlfriend….or so it seems at first. “28 Days Later” scribe Alex Garland makes his directorial debut in what is most likely one of the biggest surprise hits of 2015. Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson) wins a competition to spend a week at a private mountain estate owned by his boss (Oscar Isaac’s Nathan Bateman) to be part of an extraordinary experience. He is asked to be the human component in a turing test in Nathan’s latest experiment in artificial intelligence. Alicia Vikander takes on the role as Ava, a sophisticated robot with the ability to become self-aware. Caleb becomes suspicious of the true nature of his visit as he uncovers disturbing things about the hidden facility and the horrors it hold inside its walls.

2. Street Fighter Assassin’s Fist (2014)

Street Fighter Assassin’s Fist (2014)

It is safe to say that we can officially cast away any memories of previous Street Fighter live-action interpretation of one the most popular arcade games made in history. The passion for the source material and overall feel of the film finally captures the essence of the iconic game. The most impressive fact is that the movie is inspired by a web series released in 2010 as a proof-of-concept. During San Diego Comic-Con International 2012, Capcom announced it had granted rights to the creators to go ahead with the project. The movie details the coming of age story of Ryu and Ken as they spend time with their master, Goken, while he teaches them the fighting style known as “Ansatsuken”. Goken’s mysterious past comes back to haunt him as he faces his greatest enemy while Ryu and Ken try to stay clear of the conflict. The fighting styles, carefully choreographed fight scenes and excellent camera angles really set apart this series from the pervious films. This is a gaming/movie geek must see and we have more small screen gems coming our way!

3. Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)

Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)

Our favourite filmmaker Guillermo del Toro released an absolute gem back in 2006 with his glorious phantasmagorical cinema style set in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War. I’ve been wanting to check out Pan’s Labyrinth over the last 10 years and till this day I’m disappointed that didn’t make the effort to check it out sooner. The film details the strange and often horrifying journey of an imaginative young girl who may be the mythical princess of an underground kingdom. Her stepfather is a sadistic army captain who is prepared to kill anyone willing to stand in his way. The story unfolds as the young girl embarks on a journey to fulfil her destiny. The Spanish fable is not a story for children as we get to see her world crumble between her harsh reality and colourful daydreams. At the end of the heart-breaking tale the audience is left to decide what was real or just fantasy.

4. Black Mass (2015)

Black Mass (2015)

We finally get to see Johnny Depp at his best as he takes on one of his best roles in years portraying Irish mobster James “Whitey” Bulger. It’s the true story of one the most notorious Boston gangsters who managed the climb the criminal food chain with the assistance of , FBI Agent John Connolly portrayed by Joel Edgerton. In 1970s South Boston, Whitey evaded law enforcement by being a special informant to bring down the Italian mafia. He became one of the most ruthless and powerful gangsters in Boston history while the FBI turned a blind eye for his inside information.

5. American Ultra (2015)

American Ultra (2015)

Receiving mostly mixed reviews, “American Ultra” is a fast-paced action comedy directed by Nima Nourizadeh. It is a very entertaining popcorn flick with many exciting moments worthy of your attention. Audiences are trying to read too much into movies these days and “American Ultra” got the short end of the stick in that regard. It is an enjoyable watch that showcases Jesse Eisenberg’s ability to break the mould he has been set in since his career has taken off. Eisenberg portrays Mike, a stoner who lives a simple life with his live-in girlfriend, Phoebe, played by Kristen Stewart. Mike learns that he is a highly trained sleeper agent with the ability to be a deadly weapon. Mike is part of a government experiment that has been cancelled as the story unfolds with his willingness to do anything to stay alive. All hell breaks loose as he discovers his killer skills, but not everything he was lead to believe about him and Phoebe is true.
