4. From Dusk Till Dawn

From Dusk Till Dawn

From Dusk Till Dawn

‘From Dusk Till Dawn’ follows the same plot as the original film that starred George Clooney, Quentin Tarantino and Salma Hayek. It doesn’t pack the same punch as the Robert Rodriguez classic but the critically acclaimed director is back in the driver seat for the small screen adaptation. Based on the film of the same name, From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series is a supernatural crime saga centered around bank robber, Seth Gecko (Cotrona) and his violent, unpredictable brother, Richard “Richie” Gecko (Holtz), who are wanted by the FBI and Texas Rangers Earl McGraw (Johnson) and Freddie Gonzalez (Garcia) after a bank heist left several people dead. While on the run to Mexico, Seth and Richie encounter former minister Jacob Fuller (Patrick) and his family, whom they take hostage. Using the family RV to cross the border, chaos ensues when the group detours to a strip club that is populated by vampires. They are forced to fight until dawn in order to get out alive. The series deepens the tone of the film, adds new characters and backstories and expands the Mesoamerican mythology behind the creatures inside the club.

5. Bates Motel

Bates Motel

Bates Motel

The series created by Anthony Cipriano and executive-produced by Carlton Cuse (Lost) and Kerry Ehrin (Friday Night Lights) takes a curious look at the age old tale of the Bates family and ads a couple of new twists. After the death of her husband, Norma Bates buys a motel in the picturesque coastal town of White Pine Bay, giving herself and teenage son Norman a chance to begin anew. Shy Norman is reluctant at first, but with the help of his mother – with whom he shares an intensely close relationship – the boy begins to open up to others and make new friends. Some locals, however, aren’t as friendly and welcoming to the Bates, who discover that because White Pine Bay isn’t as peaceful as it appears, they are forced to do whatever it takes to survive. It’s a cool fresh approach with Norman’s mother still alive and with more than one brutal crime in her past.

6. Hannibal

Hannibal

Hannibal

We will never forget David Slade’s first season of Hannibal with the introduction of Jack Crawford (Laurence Fishburne), head of the Behavioral Science Unit of the FBI, and special investigator Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) who is tasked to help solve various murder cases across the Maryland area. Dancy’s portrayal of Graham with his special ability to assume the point of view of a killer is the real clincher in the series. Graham’s talent to read murder scenes often leads to the distortion of reality because of his gift. The fun starts when Jack assigns psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) to help Graham cope with the work he does. Mikkelsen is an absolute joy onscreen as he brings to life one of the most terrifying serial killers in movie history. Graham and Crawford are desperately trying to catch The Chesapeake Ripper, but little do they know he is hiding in plain sight. It is perhaps one of the best TV drama horror shows based on a cult classic movie franchise ever.
