Marvel’s “Ant-Man” might have a very tiny superhero leading the charge, but the formidable thief with the ability to shrink himself has made a big impact on critics and smashed the box office over the weekend. The friendly folks over at Rottentomatoes are very impressed with the film directed by Peyton Reed, dishing out a “fresh” score of 79%.

The critic’s consensus reads:

“Led by a charming performance from Paul Rudd, Ant-Man offers Marvel thrills on an appropriately smaller scale — albeit not as smoothly as its most successful predecessors.”

Based on the good feedback received so far it shouldn’t come as a surprise to see “Ant-Man” at the top of the box office.  The comic book movie has become the 12th straight Marvel Cinematic Universe movie to open atop North American box office, and the number crunchers expect the movie to pile up the cash over the next couple of weeks. The movie starring Paul Rudd as the titular hero grossed an estimated $58 million in its debut weekend.

Animated movie “Minions” is still going strong in second place with $50.2 million, despite the heavy onslaught from “Ant-Man”. The film has a total domestic gross of $216.7 million, accumulated over two weeks since its release. R-rated comedy “Trainwreck” starring Amy Schumer also sneaked in with a hefty $30.2 million surprise take at the box-office in third place this week.
