It is beyond me what is considered art today with the news making the rounds that one artist is looking to capitalize on the controversial “Fappening” celeb nude pics leaked earlier this month. The artist simply known as XVALA planned to showcase the pics at a St. Petersburg art gallery next month. He described his ethos behind the celeb skin display as follows:

“We share our secrets with technology. And when we do, our privacy becomes accessible to others… The commentary behind this show is a reflection of who we are today. We all become ‘users’ and in the end, we become ‘used’.”

Public outrage over the announcement to exhibit the hacked nude photos of mainly Jennifer Lawrence and Kate Upton has forced the hand of the artist’s and gallery’s planning the art show. Persuasive online petitions steered the project away from exploiting the controversial incident, that will now see the LA artist feature self-shots nude images in life-size to be displayed next month at Cory Allen Contemporary Art (CACA). Well that took a nasty turn. The show is part of his ‘Fear Google’ campaign, which also apparently includes a sculpture made of garbage collected from Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg & Kim Kardashian?

As cited by cacanet.com, the announcement of the “Art show” was supposed to highlight the seriousness of the victimization that took place (if I understand the mentioned comments correctly). Apparently the attempt to rally up people was successful judging by the petitions.

The site says:

“After announcing the exhibit, mixed responses resulted in requests that the show be canceled through various petitions. “It was inspiring to see people take action through a petition, signing their name and not just commenting on a thread,” said Cory Allen.“

“It wasn’t just about being ‘hacked’ images anymore, but now presented in the media as stolen property,” said XVALA. “People were identifying with Jennifer Lawrence’s and Kate Upton’s victimization, much more than I had anticipated, which is powerfully persuasive.”

Not sure how this elaborate “publicity stunt” will go down, but I am pretty sure that displaying your junk on life-size canvas posters is probably not the best way to get your message across. Anybody out there interested to see XVALA bare all for the sake of not being “used” by technology?
