The Walking Dead” geeks following our blog here at GeekShizzle will recall an article posted last year September, indicating that AMC is exploring options to introduce a spin-off series set in the same post-apocalyptic world. Pop the Champaign bottles and crack open the post apocalyptic survival kits……more undead is set to roam the streets!  It is with great pleasure that we share the news that “The Walking Dead” officially has a companion series! AMC gave the pilot order with production set to kick-off later this year.

AMC President Charlie Collier says in a statement:

“Almost from the beginning of The Walking Dead, fans have been curious about what is going on in the zombie apocalypse in other parts of the world. In fact, beyond requests for zombie cameos, it’s the question I get asked the most,”

“Obviously, we all take our stewardship of the original franchise incredibly seriously and we, along with Robert, Gale, David and now Dave, are all proceeding with extreme care in order to ensure that we are offering fans something truly compelling, engaging and distinct. We’re thrilled to be taking this next step with these remarkable partners.”

Details for the spin-off show are still under wraps, but in all likelihood we can expect the series to tell the stories of survival, death and triumph in other regions of the zombie breakout.

“The Walking Dead” comics series co-creator and writer Robert Kirkman, is part of the group developing the spin-off. He will serve as executive producer on the project alongside Walking Dead execs Gail Anne Hurd and David Alpert. Dave Erickson (“Sons of Anarchy“) is also expected to join the creative team.

Kirkman said about the exciting announcement:

“There are many corners of ‘The Walking Dead’ universe that remain unseen in the shadows. Being given the opportunity to shine a light into those corners and see what lurks out there is an absolute thrill. I know the fans are anxious to hear what Dave and I have been cooking up for this new universe of ‘The Walking Dead’, and I’m happy to be one step closer to sharing it with them,”

Wow, a spin-off series that is less reliant on “The Walking Dead” comics for its inspiration seems like a bold step forward. Expanding the post-apocalyptic universe with new material and characters is a fresh and interesting approach. I’m sure most “Walking Dead” fans will appreciate and enjoy Kirkman’s out the box thinking here, any thought out there from our fellow geeks?

The “Walking Dead” will return for season 5 on October 12 at 9/8c on AMC.
